I joined XR in January 2019, a few weeks after it had been established here in Norway. Since then I have been involved in a number of creative projects
Voksen School’s Elk
The first thing visitors see when entering Voksen School is a 2.4m high image of the school’s symbol – an elk – made of 10,200 plastic milk carton tops. This project involved every one of the 550+ pupils and 100+ staff in 2011.
Voksen School Wise Words project
Voksen School had its 50th birthday in 2008. To celebrate the event Sissel Zack and I devised and carried out a whole-school project. Every class came with suggestions for sayings and then formed them into 7x7cm clay tiles
Kragskogen Kindergarten mural
(Detail) The carpark behind Kragskogen nursery (barnehage) has a 17m long concrete wall, a little over 2m high. After many months of noticing its drab greyness I decided something had to be done. So it was done. The children drew. Both parents and children painted. Includes some mosaic elements. 2002
The Jack Cane Playground
As artist in residence on the Playgrounds Team of Edinburgh District Council, I held extensive participatory planning workshops with young people in Craigmillar, Edinburgh to design a new playground at the Jack Cane Centre. Workshops were then held to create numerous sculptural elements, including carved and painted wood, cast concrete tiles and mosaic panels.
Milestone House Sign
Scotland’s first hospice for people with HIV/AIDS opened in 1990. The Arts programme there offered users the chance to be creative in a range of materials. As artist in residence and workshop leader (’93-’95) I facilitated the making and installation of an 8m long sign. Cast concrete and slate.
